AND

  • To say ‘X and Y’ we add -உம் to both X and Y. So X-உம் Y-உம் means X and Y.
    • E.g. தமிழும் ஆங்கிலமும் மொழிகள் – Tamil and English are languages.
  • To say ‘X, Y, and Z’ we add -உம் to X, to Y and to Z. Note that in English you would add ‘and’ only before the last element in a series, but in Tamil the -உம் must be added to every element in the series to conjoin them with the conjunction ‘and.’
    • E.g. அவர்கள் சிங்களும் தமிழும் ஆங்கிலமும் பேசுவார்கள் – They speak Sinhala and Tamil and English.
  • You can also use மற்றும் in the same way you would use ‘and’ in English, i.e. only before the last element in a series.
    • E.g. அவர்கள் இந்து, பௌத்தம், கிறிஸ்தவம் மற்றும் இஸ்லாமிய மதங்களைப் பின்பற்றுகிறார்கள் – They practice / follow Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam religions.

ALSO

  • To say ‘X also/too’, we add -உம் to X. So X-உம் means X also/too.
    • E.g. தமிழ் மொழி. ஆங்கிலமும் மொழி – Tamil is a language. English is also a language.
  • You can also use கூட in the same way you would use ‘also/too’ in English.
    • E.g. இந்த மரம் ஆல மரமா, வேப்ப மரமா? இதுவும் கூட ஆல மரமா? – Is this tree a Banyan tree or a Neem tree? Is this a Banyan tree also?

OR

  • When -ஆ is added to two or more words in a sentence it can be used to mean ‘X or Y’? We would add -ஆ to both X and Y. So X-ஆ? Y-ஆ? means X or Y?
    • E.g. இது தமிழா? ஆங்கிலமா? – Is this Tamil or English?
  • To say ‘X or Y’ we can also -ஓ to both X and Y. So X-ஓ Y-ஒ? means X or Y?
    • E.g. யார்? அவனோ இவனோ? – Who? Him (over there) or him (over here)?
  • You can also use அல்லது in the same way you would use ‘or’ in English.
    • E.g. புறாக்களும், மரங்களும் பறவை வகைகளா? அல்லது அவை மிருக வகைகளா? – Are pigeons and crows types of birds? Or are they types of animals?
