What is the AjP?
These are adjectives made from verbs. The form allows verbs to describe or qualify a noun. They are also called verbal adjectives. E.g:
உடைந்த பொம்மை – broken toy (“the toy that broke”)
போன கிழமை – last week (“the ‘gone’ week” / “the week that went”)
வருகிற மாதம் – the coming month (“the month that will come”)
நடக்கும் திருமணம் – the wedding that will take place
படித்த ஆண் – educated man (“the man who studied”)
இறந்த பூச்சி – dead insect (“the insect that died”)
How do you create the AjP?
The AjP is not impacted by the PNG of the words associated with it. Therefore:
நான் பார்த்த பெண். The lady/girl I saw.
நான் பார்த்த பையன். The boy I saw.
நான் பார்த்த மக்கள். The people I saw.
நீ பார்த்த பெண். The lady/girl you saw.
அவர்கள் பார்த்த பெண். The lady/girl they saw.
The AjP does change, however, depending on the tense that it is in.
The positive AjP occurs in all three tenses. The past and present AjP form is made by adding -அ to the past and present roots. (Class 3 verbs change their past stem to -இன் or -இய்). So, for example:
PAST: நான் பார்த்த பெண். The lady I saw.
PRESENT (infrequently used): நான் பார்க்கிற பெண். The lady I see.
The future AjP form is formed by adding -உம் or -க்கும் to the verb root. But note that it is a convention of written Tamil that the use of the future AjP is preferred for all non-past situations (either the future or the present). So, for example:
FUTURE / PRESENT: நான் பார்க்கும் பெண். The lady who I will see / the lady I am seeing.
FUTURE / PRESENT: தெருவில் வரும் ஆடு – the goat that will come down the road / the goat that is coming down the road
The negative AjP is formed by adding -அத to the infinitive. It occurs in all tenses and the finite verbs or the context decides its tense. So, for example:
- நான் பார்க்காத பெண். The lady I didn’t see / the lady I won’t see / the lady I am not seeing.
- நடக்காத திருமணம். The wedding that didn’t happen / The wedding that is not happening / The wedding that won’t happen.

Future AjP vs non-rational future-tense finite verb
The future AjP (e.g. பார்க்கும், வரும்) is identical to the non-rational future-tense finite verb. So, for example:
வரும் ஆடு – the goat that will come
ஆடு வரும் – the goat will come
However, because the AjP must always precede a noun, (according to the principals of word order) we can distinguish between the two verb constructions using the word order.
For example:
ஆடு தெருவில் வரும் — the goat will come down the road
தெருவில் வரும் ஆடு — the goat that will come down the road / the goat that is coming down the road.
