There are three main ways that nouns will form their plural form:
| Type of Noun | Plural Suffix | E.g. 1 | E.g. 2 |
| Noun ends in a long vowel (-ஆ, -ஏ, -ஈ, -ஊ,-ஓ) or noun is two short syllables and ends in -உ. | Add -க்கள் | பூ → பூக்கள் [flower → flowers] | ஈ → ஈக்கள் [fly → flies] |
| Noun ends in -அம் | Change the ம் to ங் before you add the plural suffix -கள் | பாடம்→ பாடங்கள் [lesson → lessons] | மரம் → மரங்கள் [tree → trees] |
| All other nouns | Add -கள் | நாய் → நாய்கள் [dog → dogs] | நரி → நரிகள் [fox → foxes] |
- The plural suffix is -கள் for most nouns. E.g:
- நாய் → நாய்கள் [dog → dogs]
- நரி → நரிகள் [fox → foxes]
- மாணவர் → மாணவர்கள் [student → students]
2. If the noun ends in a long vowel (-ஆ, -ஏ, -ஓ, -ஈ, -ஊ) or is two syllables and ends in -உ, add the plural suffix -க்கள். E.g:
- பூ → பூக்கள் [flower → flowers]
- ஈ → ஈக்கள் [fly → flies]
3. For irrational nouns ending in -அம், change the ம் to ங் before the plural suffix. E.g:
- மரம் → மரங்கள் [tree → trees]
- பாடம்→ பாடங்கள் [lesson → lessons]
- படம்→ படங்கள் [picture → pictures]
