Cardinal vs Ordinal Numbers
Cardinal number + ஆம் = ordinal number (adjective). E.g:
- இரண்டு ‘two’ — இரண்டாம் ‘second’ (adj. only)
- மூன்று ‘three’ — மூன்றாம் ‘third’ (adj. only)
- நாலு ‘four’ — நாலாம் ‘fourth’ (adj. only)
The following special forms are used for the ordinal of ஒன்று ‘one’, although ஒன்றாம் is also sometimes used informally:
- முதல் ‘origin, principal; first’
- முதலாம் ‘first’ (adj. only)
An alternative suffix for this construction is -ஆவது. Note, moreover, that ordinal numbers with -ஆவது (but not those with -ஆம்) can be used as nouns as well as as adjectives. Thus, e.g:
- இரண்டாவதை(க்) கொடு – ‘give (me) the second one”
- என் வீடு இரண்டாவது – ‘my house (is) the second one’
- but இரண்டாம் may not be so used.
