Past & present participial nouns
You can add a PNG suffix to an AjP form to give the meaning of:
- that which is AjP
- one that is AjP
- a/the AjP one.
These participial nouns are often used when we don’t know the name of the person / thing which we wish to refer to. Positive participial nouns (past and present) are made by adding to the appropriate AjPs (past and present) the following PNG suffixes:
- (அ)வன்
- (அ)வள்
- (அ)வர்
- (அ)வர்கள்
- (அ)து (in formal Tamil you could also use -(அ)வை or -(அ)ன for the irrational plural)
So, for example:
- Take the following past AjP –> பார்த்த
- Like other adjectives (see: word order), the AjP would normally be followed by a noun (or pronoun), so for example –> பார்த்த பெண் (the woman who saw)
- You can add the PNG suffix ‘(அ)வள்’ to the AjP ‘பார்த்த’ to form the participial noun ‘பார்த்தவள்.’
- ‘பார்த்தவள்’ translates as —> ‘she that saw.’
In its rational form, the participial noun translates as ‘he / she / those who do / does / did.’ For example:
- வெளிநாட்டில் படித்தவன் –> he who is foreign educated / male who has studied overseas [படித்தவன் = படித்த + (அ)வன்]
- செய்கிறவள் – she who does
- செய்தவன் – he who did
In its irrational form, the participial noun translates as ‘that which does / did / makes / made.’ For example:
- சூப்பில் விழுந்தது –> that object / animal which fell in the soup [விழுந்தது = விழுந்த + (அ)து]
- செத்தது –> that object / animal which died [செத்தது = செத்த + (அ)து]**
**The past tense non-rational participial noun is the same as the past-tense non-rational singular finite verb, so செத்தது can mean ‘that thing which died’ or ‘it died’ and சூப்பில் விழுந்தது means ‘that object/animal which fell in the soup’ but ஈ சூப்பில் விழுந்தது means ‘the fly fell in the soup.’
The future participial noun
- Formed in the following way: ‘verb root – future tense suffix – அ’.
- The future tense suffixes is ப if the verb is weak and ப்ப if the verb is strong.
- Class 5 verb roots change their form before suffix is added.
- Future irrational participial nouns of classes 1 – 4 are exceptions and are constructed as follows: Verb Root + (அ)து
- Like the future AjP, the future participial noun can be used for any non-past situation, i.e. ‘that which does X, is doing X, or will do X.’
For example:
- இங்கே சாப்பிடுபவர் உன் ராஜா – the one who eats / is eating / will eat here is your king
- உன் அரிசி வாங்குபவர்கள் – those who buy / are buying / will buy your rice

Negative participial nouns:
- Formed in the following way: Negative AjP* + (அ)வன் / (அ)வள் / (அ)ர்வகள் / (அ)து / வை (formal)The negative participial noun translates as: ‘he / she / they … who does not / did not / will not.’
- The tense is decided by the finite verb or the context.
*Recall that the negative AjP is formed by adding -அத to the infinitive. It occurs in all tenses and the finite verbs or the context also decides its tense.
