Lesson 20. Telling Time / Going to the Cinema

2. Telling the time
To ask the time, you can say என்ன நேரம்? or நேரம் என்ன? To respond, you may add மணி to the hour. For example: ஒரு மணி (one o’clock), ஆறு மணி (six o’clock), ஒன்பது மணி (nine o’clock). Because this is a spoken Tamil class, try to add மணி to the spoken form.

To say a quarter, half or three-quarters in the Tamil spoken form add கால், அரை or முக்கால் respectively. For example:

ஏழரை (ஏழு + அரை) – half past seven
ஆறே கால் (ஆறு + ஏ + கால்) – a quarter past six
எட்டே முக்கால் (எட்டு + ஏ + முக்கால்) – a quarter to nine

Note that in the spoken Tamil form the -உ sound at the end of each number becomes an -ஏ sound when that number is added to கால் or முக்கால். For example ஆறு கால் would be pronounced ஆறே கால். When a number is added to அரை, the -உ sound is cancelled out. For example, ஆறு becomes ஆறரை.

To indicate if the time is in the morning / evening you can also add:
காலை / காலையில் – in the morning
மாலை / மாலையில் – in the evening

In the written form, the times are written in full. For example, instead of saying ஒண்ணே கால் (a quarter past one) you would say ஒரு மணி பதினைந்து நிமிடம் (one fifteen OR one hour and fifteen minutes), where பதினைந்து means fifteen, மணி means hour and நிமிடம் means minute. We will cover the written forms of the times in the intermediate course.

14. Learn some new time related phrases

  • இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் நேரம் – a little more time
  • நேரம் ஆச்சு – it is time!
  • எவ்ளோ நேரம் ஆகும்? – how long will it take?
  • இன்னும் நேரம் ஆகவில்லை – it is not yet time
  • விடுமுறை – leave, holiday
  • வழக்கம்  (-ஆக, -ஆன) – that which is usual; customary; custom
  • பழக்கம் (-ஆன) – habit; practice/familiarity
  • சாதாரணம் (-ஆக, -ஆன) – usually, ordinarily
