2. Learn some of the commonly used defective verbs:

| 1 | வேண்டும் / வேண்டாம் | be necessary, be needed or required, be wanted or deserved | எங்களுக்கு பழங்கள் வேண்டும். We want fruits. |
| 2 | முடியும் / முடியாது | be able to; have the ability to; can | அவள் உணவு வாங்க முடியும். She can buy food. |
| 3 | கூடாது | a prohibitive; a form of disapproval. | நீங்கள் குடிக்க கூடாது. You should not drink. |
| 4 | தெரியும் / தெரியாது | know | அவருக்குப் பல மொழிகள் தெரியும். He / she knows several languages. |
| 5 | பிடிக்கும் / பிடிக்காது | like; be agreeable to | எனக்கு பழங்கள் பிடிக்காது. I don’t like fruits. |
| 6 | போதும் / போதாது | be adequate or enough; be sufficient | “சோறு போதும்,” என்றார். “Enough rice,” he / she said. |
| 7 | கிடைக்கும் / கிடைக்காது | get; obtain; produce; yield/be found | இந்த மரத்தில் தேங்காய் (coconut) கிடைக்கும். This tree yields coconuts. 15 ரூபாய்க்கு ஒரு பழம் கிடைக்காது. One cannot get a fruit for fifteen rupees. |
| 8 | விளங்கும் /விளங்காது | be clear; be understood; make sense | அவருக்கு தமிழ் விளங்கும். He / she understands Tamil. |
| 9 | புரியும் / புரியாது | be clear; be understood; make sense | நான் சொல்வது அவனுக்குப் புரியாது. He does not understand what I am saying. |
| 10 | பசி / பசிக்கிறது / பசிக்காது | be hungry | எனக்கு பசிக்கிறது. I am hungry. |
| 11 | இருக்கிறது / இருக்காது | have | அவருக்கு ஒரு வீடு இருக்கிறது. He / she has a house. |
| 12 | உண்டு / இல்லை | be (present in a place or in something) or have | உலகத்தில் நல்லவர்களும் உண்டு, கெட்டவர்களும் உண்டு. There are good people in this world, there are bad people too. |
3. Translate from Tamil to English:

அமிதா: என்னால் இறைச்சி (meat) சாப்பிட முடியாது.
இலைஜா: ஏன்?
அமிதா: எனது மதத்தில், மிருகங்களைக் கொல்லக் (to kill) கூடாது.
இலைஜா: உனக்கு மரக்கறி சாப்பிடப் பிடிக்குமா?
அமிதா: ஆம். மரக்கறி சுகாதாரத்திற்கு (health) நல்லது என்றும் தெரியும்.
