இது and அது are subject pronouns. இது means ‘this’; அது means ‘that.’ Both can also mean ‘it.’
E.g. இது படம் – this is a picture
E.g. அது ஒரு மரம் – That is a tree.
E.g. இது ஒரு பூ – That is a flower.
To describe a specific object or person observed by the speaker we would use அந்த (that) and இந்த (this). They also refer to some specific person or thing that was previously mentioned, understood or known. அந்த (that) and இந்த (this) are adjectives, so they follow word order rules and must always precede a noun.
E.g. இந்த பூனை ஒரு பெரிய விலங்கு – this (specific) cat is a big animal.
E.g. அந்த மரம் ஒரு ஆலமரம் – that (specific) tree is a Banyan.
E.g. இந்த பூ ஒரு அழகான பூ – this flower is a beautiful flower.
When speaking of (time) இந்த refers to the present, while அந்த refers to the past.
E.g. அந்த வாரம், நான் உடம்பு சரியில்லை – that week, I was not feeling well.
E.g. இந்த வாரம் சிங்கங்கள் பசிகின்றன – this week, the lions are hungry.
Since adjectives have the same form regardless of the gender, singularity/plurality of the noun which follows, then அந்த and இந்த do not change form either. E.g:
This book is important – இந்த புத்தகம் முக்க்ய்யம்.
These books are important – இந்த புத்தகங்கள் முக்க்ய்யம்.
