- The verb classes
Tamil verbs can be divided into 13 different classes. Some grammarians use a division of 7 classes (with subclasses) and some use a simpler 2-3 class system.
In simpler systems there are three classes of verbs: weak verbs (classes 1 to 4), those that are irregular/in the middle (class 5), and strong verbs (classes 6-7). Based on their classification, verbs conjugate out in different ways. There are also irregularities since some verbs do not fit any system of classification neatly.
Weak verbs (classes 1 to 4): உட்கார் (to sit), செய் (to do/make),
Irregular verbs (class 5): வா (to come), போ (to go),
Strong verbs (classes 6 – 7): கொடு (to give), இரு (to be).
The verb form in the examples above (உட்கார், போ, கொடு) is called the verb root. It is the most basic form of the verb and can be used to form imperatives.
