AjP Constructions

AjP constructions can be used in five main ways:

  1. Clauses of time and manner
  2. To make requests
  3. To make quotes adjectives (என்ற)
  4. As soon as / immediately upon
  5. As / so that / in order to / in accordance with

AjP-போதுwhenசிறு பையனாக இருந்தபோது நடனம் ஆடி வந்தேன் – I used to dance when I was a young boy

AjP- பொழுது

when (formal)நான் வீட்டுக்குப் போன பொழுது அவர் வந்தார் – He came when I went home.
AjP-சமயம்at the time ofE.g. நான் கடிதம் எழுதின சமயம் அவன் வந்தார் – He came as I was writing the letter.
AjP-வரை/வரைக்கும் up to, untilநீ இந்தக் வேலையை முடிக்கும் வரை இங்கிருந்து போகக்கூடாது – Until you finish this work, you should not leave from here.

அவர் படிக்கிற வரைக்கும் அவர் விளையாட முடியாது – He can’t play until he studies.
AjP-உடனேimmediately after, as soon asநீ கூப்பிட்ட உடனே அவன் கூப்பிட்டான்! – He called as soon as you called!
Past AjP- பிறகு / பின் / பின்னால் / பின்னே / பின்பு / அப்புறம்

afterஅமித்தா மருத்துவரிடம் சென்ற பிறகு, டேனியல் தனது மதிய உணவை சாப்பிட்டார் – Daniel ate his lunch after Amita left to the Doctor’s.

This construction always occurs with the past AjP, even when the event is something that has not happened yet or if it is something that happens in the future. That is because the tense is relative to other events in the sentence that invariably occur after the action specified by the AjP.
Future AjP- முன்னால் / முன் / முன்னே / முன்பு

beforeE.g: அமைச்சர் வரும் முன்னால் நான் அவருடைய குரலைக் கேட்டேன் – Before the Minister came I heard his voice.

This construction always occurs with the future AjP, even when the event is something that has happened in the past. That is because the tense is relative to other events in the sentence that invariably occur before the action specified by the AjP.

2. Making requests

  • [A…future AjP]-படி + (வேண்டு, கேள், etc.)
  • Translates as: “request, ask that A do X”
  • E.g. அவன் அவளை பணத்தை கொடுக்கும்படி கேட்டான் – He asked her to give the money.

3. Making quotes adjectives

  • என்ற is the AjP form of the connector என்று
  • It allows a quote to serve as an adjective.
    • E.g. [X என்ற] பையன் – A boy named X.
    • E.g. [Y என்ற] குரல் – A voice saying Y.
    • E.g. [Z என்ற] சிந்தனை – The thought that Z.

4. As soon as / immediately upon

  • [A…past AjP]-து + உம் /உடனே
  • Translates as: ‘as soon as A does/did X, immediately upon A doing X’
    • E.g. தூங்கியதும் எழுந்தான் – Got up as soon as he slept.
    • E.g. எழுந்த உடனே குளித்தான் – Showered as soon as he got up.

5. As / so that / in order to / in accordance with

  • AjP + படி
  • Translates as ‘As / in the manner of / so that A does/did X.’
  • Can also mean in order to / in accordance with
    • E.g. அவள் சொன்னபடி நான் செய்தேன் – I did as she said
    • E.g. அவள் சொன்னபடி நான் செய்வேன் – I will do as she says
